The Centre for Teaching Excellence will be hosting our annual New Faculty Teaching Days on August 9 thru August 12, 2022. This event is intended for all new faculty who have arrived since September 1st of last year (2021) as well as any new faculty who were unable to attend our sessions last year or are new to their current teaching assignment. We also welcome any new faculty that arrived during the last two years and would value participating in these sessions in person. All sessions will be held in CTE's workshop rooms (MC 2036/2036a) and registration is available on GSMU.
The August New Faculty Teachings Days allow instructors to complete all the workshops that form the core of our New Faculty offerings in a concentrated format at a timely point before the start of the fall term. Who Are Our Learners (CTE9910)
Rumours abound about "students today" and, more locally, about "Waterloo students." This session provides an overview of learning and learners generally, and also more specifically at Waterloo. The information provided will allow you to better plan your teaching in light of learner characteristics, generally and at Waterloo.

Course Dynamics and Engagement (CTE9906)
What will you do when a student arrives late to your class? Dominates a discussion? Tells you that your course is much harder than all their other courses? These are everyday issues that all faculty member experience. In this workshop, you will become aware of issues common to the teaching environment (whether in class or online) and how they influence class dynamics, and you will work to devise strategies to handle these issues. We will also consider the impacts of the potential strategies developed in terms of learner motivation and engagement.

Assessment as Learning (CTE9912)
How do we know students know and can do new things as a result of our courses and assignments? How will they know what they have learned and to what level? In this session, we will examine how assessment decisions are made in the context of course objectives and constrained by class size and grading time allotted. We will address principles of feedback and evaluation of student work as well as practical implementation advice. Participants will leave with the knowledge required to start an assessment plan for a course or assignment, and how to approach assessments as opportunities for learning.

Course Design Foundations (CTE6642)
This six-hour workshop introduces the principles of aligned course design to instructors with little or no prior teaching experience running courses of their own. By the end of the session, participants will have considered learning outcomes, assessments, teaching and learning activities and their alignment in disciplinary and logistical contexts.

You have your course design ready and now need to communicate it to students. What basics must be on your accessible course outline in your Faculty, and what are the nice-to-haves? How do you achieve a course outline "voice" while also making sure you've covered all your course outline basics? In this workshop, we will guide the construction of your course outline.

Copyright, Library Services and Academic Integrity (CTE9919)
In this session, Amanda McKenzie, Quality Assurance (Academic Programs) Director, will speak to academic integrity at Waterloo and Kari Weaver, Learning, Teaching, and Instructional Design Librarian, and her colleagues will discuss how librarians can help you integrate information literacy into your courses and address copyright responsibilities. Kari will be joined by a panel of her colleagues - Associate University Librarian, Learning, Research, and User Services, Victoria Chu, Copyright and Licensing Specialist, Lauren Byl and Liaison Librarian, Jackie Stapleton. The session will begin with presentations and will be followed by an informal Q & A period to address your needs.

LEARN Sessions
This session will introduce you to LEARN (D2L Brightspace), our course management system. You will become acquainted with the tools available within LEARN with a view to structuring activities and assessments, collecting resources, and communicating with your students.

This session will provide an opportunity for you to draw on the ideas you have collected during the teaching days and begin to develop your course site. CTE Liaisons will be present to offer support permitting individuals to seek help and/or work independently on tools and activities as needed.
