The Centre for Teaching Excellence will be hosting our annual New Faculty Teaching Days on Wednesday, August 8 to Friday, August 10, 2018. This event is intended for all new faculty who have arrived since September 1st of last year (2017) as well as any new faculty who were unable to attend our sessions last year or are new to their current teaching assignment.
These three days in August allow instructors to complete all four workshops that form the core of our New Faculty offerings in a concentrated format at a timely point before the start of the fall term. In addition, participants are able to extend their course preparation on the third day by completing the Syllabus Builder and Learn Kick Starter workshops. These Teaching Days are the foundation to our Teaching Development Plan for new faculty. Note: If your preference is to work in e-format please bring your laptop each day of the workshop series.

CTE910 Who Are Our Learners
Rumours abound about "students today" and, more locally, about "Waterloo students." This session provides an overview of learning and learners generally, and also more specifically at Waterloo. The information provided will allow you to better plan your teaching in light of learner characteristics, generally and at Waterloo.
CTE906 Classroom Dynamics and Engagement
What will you do when a student arrives late to your class? Disturbs others in the class with inappropriate laptop use? Tells you that your course is much harder than all their other courses? These are everyday issues that every faculty member will experience. At this workshop, you will become aware of common issues in classroom dynamics and will work to devise strategies to handle these issues. We will also consider the impacts of the potential strategies developed in terms of learner motivation and engagement.
CTE912 Assessment for Learning
How do we know students know and can do new things as a result of our courses and assignments? How will they know they know? Assessment decisions are made in the context of course objectives and constrained by class size and grading time allotted. We'll cover principles of feedback and evaluation of student work as well as practical advice. Participants will leave with the knowledge required to start an assessment plan for a course or assignment, along with tips about assessment tools such as rubrics, group grading forms, and multiple choice item analysis.
CTE642 Course Design Fundamentals
This six-hour workshop introduces the principles of aligned course design to faculty and teaching staff with little or no prior teaching experience running courses of their own. By the end of the session, participants will have considered learning outcomes, assessments, teaching and learning activities and their alignment in disciplinary and logistical contexts.
CTE916 Syllabus Builder
You have your course design ready and now need to communicate it to students. What basics must be on your accessible syllabus in your Faculty, and what are the nice-to-haves? How do you achieve a syllabus "voice" while also making sure you've covered all your course outline basics? We will have tools and expertise available so that you leave with a completed product.

CTE917 Learn Kick Starter
The half day LEARN Kick Starter will include a hands-on introduction to the core tools of LEARN (Desire2Learn Brightspace) course management system and introduce participants to available resources for developing online course activities and presence of their course. Participants will have ample opportunity to work individually to begin developing their course site. CTE Liaisons will be present to offer support at several stations allowing individuals to seek help and/or work independently on tools and activities that suit their specific needs. Note: This is a hands-on session. Participants should bring a laptop.
