Description

With the transition to remote / online learning necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, many students lost opportunities for experiential, outdoor, and place-based learning.  With support from a LITE Grant, Dr. Kelsey Johansen collaborated with CTE’s Liaison, Natalie Chow, to design a course with the goal of engaging students in an experiential, outdoor, and place-based learning experience designed to foster place attachment, pro-environmental attitudes, environmental concern, and nature stewardship in an online environment.  A PebblePad workbook was used to support formative and summative reflections, nature journaling and peer review activities.

During this presentation, Kelsey will share how the PebblePad workbook supported student learning and peer-to-peer engagement. In addition, we’ll hear how the comparison of pre- and post-surveys combined with a thematic analysis of the PebblePad portfolios sheds light on the impact that online learning and remote course delivery combined with outdoor experiential place-based seminars had on students’ achievement of experiential, place-based, outdoor education course-based intended outcomes as well as on achievement of specific nature journaling goals related to cultivating a growth mindset, building a supportive learning environment, and reflecting on transferable skills.
