Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL) is a High Impact Pedagogy that holds great potential for transforming the undergraduate educational experience. EBL addresses the learning objectives common to postsecondary institutions, including the demand for transferable skills. Perhaps most importantly, EBL enhances students' learning and their satisfaction with their university experience.
EBL fits under the broad umbrella of problem-based learning, although it can be quite different from the general use of cases or problems in the classroom. EBL is frequently conflated with strategies such as group work, research, or problem solving. It is, however, a distinct pedagogy, with a specific pedagogical structure that leads to the desired learning outcomes.
This workshop will focus on the pedagogical structure of closed-loop, reiterative, enquiry-based learning. It will provide a theoretical overview of the course structure and learning outcomes. The majority of the workshop will provide the opportunity to reflect on the structure of cases and scenarios and how they make a course. Each participant will map a sample scenario applicable to their own teaching. Participants are asked to bring with them a complex and open-ended issue or problem; a question without a clear answer, to serve as the basis for their scenario.
