What types of jobs do Rec students get?
The following are specific examples of junior and intermediate/senior level co-op jobs held recently by students in various sectors.
The jobs are listed in a common order of progression, as students often begin with entry level positions and move into more senior level positions as they gain experience.
Remember when you are applying for jobs you can apply to any jobs, regardless of the majors or areas listed in the posting. Sometimes the greatest opportunities come from searching out the unexpected, and letting employers know about the great skill sets that Recreation students have developed.
Recreation, sport and business related positions
League Operations Administrator
The League Operations Administrator will have the opportunity to work with a non-for-profit regional soccer league and will be responsible for all things related to the league operations that are administrative in nature. The League Operations Administrator will support game scheduling, tracking of player registrations and generating game sheets.
Marketing and Sales Intern
The Marketing and Sales Intern will have the opportunity to work for a gym franchise and will be responsible for creating and executing marketing campaigns as well as managing social media. The Marketing and Sales Intern will also be involved with day-to-day facility operations and helping plan, promote and oversee all promotional events.
Sales Funnel and Lead Generation Associate
The Sales Funnel and Lead Generation Associate will be responsible for supporting the marketing and sales team at a healthcare technology start-up. They will be responsible for conducting market research and reaching out to potential market partners and retailers.
Game Day Operations Intern
The Game Day Operations Intern will have the opportunity to work with a minor national hockey league team and support its day to day operations. The Game Day Operations Intern will help plan and support game day event planning and learn to plan, organize and execute elements necessary for in-game entertainment.
Project Assistant, Operations and Programs
The Project Assistant for Operations and Programs will have the opportunity to work with a national physical activity charity. The Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting with projects related to the daily operations of the charity in communities across Canada. They will have the opportunity to perform data analysis and connect with internal and external stakeholders nation-wide.
Partnerships Assistant
The Partnerships Intern will have the opportunity to work with a national golf association and assist with coordinating, planning and organizing various national golf tournaments. The Partnerships Intern will be responsible for maintaining relationships with current sponsors and ensuring that contractual obligations are met. They will have the opportunity to research prospective tournament sponsors and will network with a wide variety of stakeholders.
Recreation, community and leadership positions
Outdoor Education Instructor/Counsellor
The Outdoor Education Instructor/Counsellor will have the opportunity to work at an Outdoor Education Camp. They will be responsible for supervising campers, implementing special programming and will gain experience in various fields of interest, such as environmental sustainability and outdoor survival skills.
Event Support Specialist
The Event Support Specialist will have the opportunity to work at an event coordination app company in a front-facing customer service role and will coordinate digital events for clients. The Event Support Specialist will be the first point of contact for clients and will assist and learn from professional events Coordinators.
Community Support Worker
The Community Support Worker will have the opportunity to work for a regional nonprofit organization that supports adults with disabilities. The Community Support worker will be responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing leisure activities both on and off site. They will have a chance to assist with program development and evaluating program effectiveness.
Youth Activity Facilitator
The Youth Activity Facilitator will have the opportunity to work for a regional school board and support various recreation activities. The Youth Activity Facilitator will assist with an at-risk student population and support their learning, including physical activity. They will also have a chance to plan and lead in-school initiatives, help track students who are at-risk and collect data to help inform programming.
Social Entrepreneur-in-Training
The Social Entrepreneur-in-Training will have the opportunity to gain exposure to several different start-ups and early stage social enterprises across the region. They will gain experience in various start-up fields and work in a variety of roles including social media management and web design and development
Community Recreation Facilitator
The Community Recreation Facilitator will have the opportunity to work at a community-based non-profit that supports adults with acquired brain injuries. The Community Recreation Facilitator will support clients in a one on one basis and assist with day to day program operations. They will also have the opportunity to connect with external stakeholders and will learn about grant applications and the process surrounding the resourcing and funding of a non-profit agency.
Allied health care opportunities
Vocational/Residential Assistant
The Vocational/Residential Assistant will have the opportunity to work in a residential home where they will live and work with people with intellectual disabilities. The Vocational/Residential Assistant will be able to assist with documentation, support administrating medications as needed and create accessible programming for residents.
Inclusion Counsellor
The Inclusion Counsellor will have the opportunity to work on a one to one basis with a child with a disability over a summer in a camp setting. The Inclusion Counsellor will have the opportunity to assist with behavioral challenges and adapt activities to be more inclusive. They will also have the chance to be part of a respite program where they will assist a child/family in their home.
Programs Assistant
The Programs Assistant will have the opportunity to work in a school setting under a provincial disability advocate society. The Programs Assistant will be responsible for research and planning classroom programming and assisting with day to day student activities. They will also have a chance to review existing programming and make recommendations for improvement.
Community Recreation Facilitator
The Community Recreation Facilitator will have the opportunity to work with a community-based non-profit agency that supports adults with acquired brain injury. The Community Recreation Facilitator will have the chance to lead therapy groups independently, planning special events and running drop-in sessions. They will also have the opportunity to support clients on a one-to-one basis in community programs.
Recreation Therapy Student
The Recreation Therapy Student will have the opportunity to work in a regional inpatient healthcare center assisting with a schizophrenia program. The Recreation Therapy Student will be responsible for facilitating existing programming and assisting the Recreational Therapists. They will also have the opportunity to help develop patient- specific programming as well as create new group programming.
Community Inclusion and Leisure Collaborator
The Community Inclusion and Leisure Collaborator will have the opportunity to work at a non-profit organization that aims to support people who have developmental disabilities. The Community Inclusion and Leisure Collaborator will be responsible for creating and evaluating recreational programs to provide support for adults with developmental disabilities. They will also assist with public education and advocacy through social media marketing.
Tourism and event opportunities
Host Instructor
The Host Instructor will have the opportunity to gain experience with the day-to-day operations of an outdoor camp. They will provide first class instruction to guests and manage groups in a variety of recreation-based activity. The Instructor will support guest skill development by creating new programming centered on leadership and will have the opportunity to deliver it to school groups, organizations and corporate clients.
Student Museum Gallery Interpreter
The Student Museum Gallery Interpreter will have the opportunity to work at a regional museum and enrich the visitor experience through the delivery of presentations, demonstrations, activities and sharing information about specific exhibits. They will also be responsible for event planning, set-up and delivery and providing guided tours for visitors.
Program Support
The Program Support student will have the opportunity to work at a provincial ministry and support an environmental assessment program. The Program Support student will be responsible for preparing presentations and conducting research surrounding environmental program development. They will also have the opportunity to provide input on analysis of environmental assessment approval components.
Urban Outreach Team Leader
The Urban Outreach Team Leader will have the opportunity to work across Canada with a national tourism and environmental governmental organization. The Urban Outreach Team Member will be responsible for promoting the organization at special events and urban venues as well as delivering programming focused on sustainability.
Accommodations and Adventure Listings Manager
The Accommodation and Adventures Listings Manager will have the opportunity to work for a national tourism rental company that specializes in creating custom experiences. The Accommodation and Adventures Listings Manager will have the opportunity to conduct market research, negotiate with potential accommodation hosts and support events. There will also be the opportunity to connect with numerous stakeholders through maintenance of contracts.
Heritage Interpreter and Paddle Guide
The Heritage Interpreter and Paddle Guide will have the opportunity to work for a national nature and heritage organization in supporting interpretive tours. The Heritage Interpreter and Paddle Guide will be able to teach paddling skills to visitors and teach them about local history. They will also have an opportunity to develop and implement new tour materials over the course of their work term.
