Thursday, May 6, 2021 2:45 pm - 4:45 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

Fenton Litwiller headshot and name.

Professor Fenton Litwiller has been doing research and collaborating with local queer organizations, community mentors and queer youth to host drag performance and genderplay workshops for 2SLGTQ youth. This presentation will highlight the challenges inherent in such ‘risky’ work for those who are most invested (the youth and mentors themselves), articulate youth notions of queer joy and gender euphoria, and illustrate knowledge mobilization products that offer potential opportunities for gender exploration and expression beyond binaries.

The precarity of queer joy and gender euphoria also serves as the keynote presentation of the 2021 Graduate Leisure Research Symposium.

Fenton Litwiller

Fenton Litwiller is a leisure scholar and assistant professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Litwiller’s research program emphasizes the use of critical inquiry to investigate inclusive recreation environments. They are currently developing a project driven by interrelated research questions about gender, youth, sexuality, and play by connecting 2SLGBTQQI youth to a drag performance and genderplay workshop. In the workshop, mentors work with youth to explore gender through make up, movement to music, and costuming.
