Student holding notebook, phone, video game controller, paper and laptopDescriptionBlended Learning integrates thoughtfully structured online activities into face-to-face courses. The online learning activities can include quizzes, discussion forums, peer review, interaction with course materials, and more. These activities and resources can help prepare students for in-class activities; promote their understanding of challenging course concepts; assess their retention of course concepts and skills; and foster a sense of community within the course. When the integration is thoughtfully designed, students learn more effectively and have a higher satisfaction as compared to online or traditional, face-to-face courses (Garrison & Kanuka, 2004). This workshop, comprising two 2-hour sessions (one on Monday, February 27, 2017 and Monday, March 6, 2017), will introduce the principles of blended course design and provide opportunity and support for participants to redesign an existing course, or parts of a course, to a blended mode. Participants should already have taken Course Design Fundamentals or an equivalent course design workshop; for those who have not, online pre-work will be available to get you up to speed.

Learning Outcomes: After the session, participants will be able to:

  • describe different kinds of blended learning;
  • identify the advantages and challenges of developing and teaching blended courses;
  • identify the technologies available for designing and creating content and activities for blended courses;
  • align intended learning outcomes, assessments; and teaching and learning activities;
  • create a plan for implementing a blended task and/or a blended course.

Facilitators: Mary Power (CTE), and Monica Vesely (CTE)
