Equity-Minded Teaching for TAs (CTE2272)

Workshop description

​In this interactive workshop, we will use case studies to discuss and apply foundational concepts and ideas related to equity, diversity, and inclusion to analyze classroom situations that you may encounter as a TA. Prior to the in-person workshop, you are asked to review the “Introduction to Equity” recorded lecture (1 hour) on UW’s Anti-racism Education Road map webpage and complete a brief quiz. During the in-person workshop, you will have an opportunity to work in small groups to discuss with your peers  inclusive and equity-minded teaching in your disciplinary and teaching contexts and learn teaching strategies that support equity and inclusivity within and beyond the classroom context (e.g., tutorials, office hours, online communication).

Time Commitment

Approximately 2.5 hours.

Workshop delivery

The content and expected effort for this workshop are approximately equivalent to 2.5 hours total, but spread over a longer timeframe so that you can move at your own pace.

This online workshop consists of:

• a recorded one-hour lecture, "Introduction to Equity" (located on the Anti-racism Education Road Map webpage) followed by a short quiz in LEARN, that must be completed by the due date of Monday, June 10 by noon
• a live in-person session in MC-2036, that takes place on Thursday, June 13 from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Registration

• Registration required (if this is your first time using GoSignMeUp, you will need to set up your acccount first)

• Participants will receive an attendance credit towards the Fundamentals program if they complete all of the required tasks in the module, including all the module activities.
• Participants who do not complete the pre-workshop quiz by the due date will have their registration in the workshop cancelled, and will need to register again when next offered.
• The required quiz will be available to complete after May 23 

Accessing the online material and quiz

The tasks, that must be completed a week before the live session, are located in the Fundamentals of University Teaching course in LEARN and on the Anti-racism Education Road map webpage.

The workshop pre-work consists of two tasks:

1. Review the one hour Introduction to Equity PowerPoint located under the Introduction section Anti-racism Education Road map webpage. (Each slide of the presentation includes recorded audio that you should listen too while reviewing) 
2. Complete the short Equity-minded Teaching for TAs (CTE2272) quiz in Learn 

If you do not yet have access to the Fundamentals course, you will need to self-register for it. Please follow the directions on the Fundamentals self-registration webpage to add the course to your LEARN course list.

Cancellations

This workshop has limited enrolment spots and a waiting list. If you have registered but can't complete the workshops learn tasks, please cancel your registration well in advance through the registration system, so that someone else can fill your spot.
