The Teaching-stream Faculty: Exploring different perspectives, Sarah Ruffell, Biology

Teaching- stream faculty are a relatively new academic position in Canadian universities. This workshop will discuss what a teaching-stream faculty position is and how it compares to other positions within academia. Emphasis will be placed on comparing this new model of academic employment with the traditional tenure-stream faculty appointments as well as other contemporary models of academic employment (i.e., contractually-limited instructors/lecturers and part-time instructors usually called adjuncts or sessionals).  During the workshop, we will discuss critical perspectives on teaching-stream model articulated by North American academics. As a group, we will also explore possibilities and limitations of the teaching-stream model and critique common misconceptions regarding the role of these educators within the university. By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to explain how the teaching stream appointments function as a model of academic employment in contemporary university and identify some of the challenges and opportunities offered by this new model of academic employment.

Notes:
  • Participants will receive an attendance credit if they arrive on time and stay until the end of the event.
  • A maximum of one special topic workshops can be counted towards your Fundamentals certificate.
