Special Topics in Teaching (CTE219)

Tuesday, July 25, 2017 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)
Location: EV1 241

Description

Join us for two interactive presentations by doctoral students taking part in the advanced Certificate in University Teaching (CUT) program, and find out more about the educational research interests of your fellow graduate students across campus. This will be a 1.5 hour-long session that will count towards your Fundamentals workshop credit.

Teaching Statistics to Health Students (50 min; workshop), Sophie Hogeveen, Applied Health Sciences

As evidence-based decision-making becomes the standard, students in health-related disciplines will be required to understand and apply statistical concepts in their future careers. For this reason, it is important to build a strong foundation of knowledge and ability early in their training and foster positive attitudes towards statistics that will encourage them in their continued education. This workshop will explore attitudes and anxiety towards statistics and strategies to deal with these issues on the part of instructors to help them to be more effective in their teaching.

Math Anxiety: Causes, Effects, and Treatments (15 min.; presentation), Alexander Howse, Faculty of Math and CTE

In this talk, I will explore the concept of math anxiety: the negative feelings and reactions certain individuals exhibit when faced with performing mathematical tasks. Such reactions can lead to math avoidance behaviours which can negatively impact students' higher education and career prospects. I will briefly discuss what groups are most likely to exhibit math anxiety, its possible causes, short and long term effects, and ways for the instructor and for students to reduce math anxiety.
