Description

Join us for an interactive mini-workshop by a doctoral student taking part in the advanced Certificate in University Teaching (CUT) program, and find out more about the educational research interests of your fellow graduate students across campus. This will be a 1 hour-long session that will count toward your Fundamentals workshop credit.

Robots as a Teaching Tool (interactive workshop; 1 hour)

Brandon DeHart, PhD Candidate, Electrical and Computer Engineering

In this workshop, we will discuss how and why teachers at the university level might want to incorporate robots into their classrooms as a teaching tool. The emphasis of this workshop will not be on teaching robotics, nor on using robots in the lab to demonstrate robotics topics, but on using robots to teach more fundamental concepts.  Robots have been used as a teaching tool in the educational world for quite some time now, and doing so can have a dramatic positive effect on the motivation and interest of the students involved, even when workload increases.
The purpose of this workshop will be to highlight for attendees what reasons there might be to use robots as a teaching tool, what common challenges there are in using robots, and how they might use robots in their own classrooms.
