Special Topics in Teaching (CTE219)

Wednesday, March 16, 2016 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)
Description: Please join us for two interactive presentations by PhD candidates taking part in the Certificate in University Teaching program.

Title: Why should we use case-method as a teaching strategy in Kinesiology?

Abstract: Case-method is a teaching strategy focused on developing students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills through the analysis of real professional problems (i.e. cases). Despite its origins in business education, case-method has been extensively used in health-related courses. Yet, evidence of the use and effectiveness of case-method in Kinesiology is almost non-existent. The aim of this research presentation will be to propose reasons why case-method should be used as teaching strategy in Kinesiology and provide an example of how this method could be applied in a KIN course.

Title: Learning while ‘mature’: A literature analysis of perspectives on mature studentship in higher education

Abstract: There is a significant influx of ‘mature’ learners in today’s post-secondary learning environments. This presentation will respond to a need to know more about mature student learners (Young, 2000). Specifically, I hope to discuss perceptions of students who are institutionally defined as ‘mature’ and present perspectives on mature studentship by students re-entering study. I focus on a range of mature student experiences in college and university environments using literature from the UK, Australia, the US, and Canada. This presentation focuses on: (1) how post-secondary education literature describe mature student learners; (2) how mature students describe personal experiences in higher education; and (3) strengths, challenges, and needed supports discussed in education literature with regards to mature studentship. This presentation will end with a discussion of techniques and supports facilitators can use to encourage re-entering students in post-secondary classrooms.
