Description: Please join us for an interactive workshop by a PhD candidate taking part in the Certificate in University Teaching program.

Title: Student Evaluations of Teaching

Abstract: Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET), also known as course evaluations and course critiques, are used in many institutions of higher education to assess the effectiveness of the course and instructor’s teaching approach. In the last decade, SET’s have been subject to intense research relating to their validity and reliability. In this one-hour workshop, we will explore the usage, benefits, and limitations of these evaluations. Drawing on the published literature, we will discuss some of the biases that might be present in students’ responses, as well as ways to mitigate them. We will also discuss recommendations of how to read and better understand SET scores. This hands-on workshop will include a variety of discussions, debates, brainstorming activities as well as a critique activity of the uW’s own SET instruments.

Facilitator: Abdelhalim Hiassat, PhD candidate

Notes:

  • Participants will receive an attendance credit if they arrive on time and stay until the end of the event.
