High Impact Practices in Large Classes- Identifying Barriers and Brainstorming Solutions (CTE740)

Is it possible to incorporate high impact practices into a large class?

If you teach a large class, or will be teaching a large class in the future, and are interested in brainstorming solutions to overcome the challenges you encounter teaching your large class, please join this working session of the Waterloo High Impact Practices Group (WHIP Group) (CTE740) lunch series.

A light lunch will be provided. Please register for CTE740 [Session Number 004 –Brainstorming] by Wednesday Nov. 11, so we can plan accordingly .

High Impact Practices are those practices which, when done well, have been linked to higher GPAs, cognitive development, deeper learning practices, greater satisfaction and perceived learning (Kuh, 2008).   Kuh identified eight characteristics inherent in high quality high impact practices (Kuh& O’Donnell, 2013).  High impact results are all about high levels of engagement.

We want our classes to be engaging and interactive but making this happen in a large class can be challenging for a number of reasons.

This working session is an opportunity for you to identify what you would like to incorporate into your large class to facilitate student engagement and deeper levels of learning, and identify the barriers that prevent you from doing so.  Together we will brainstorm solutions and identify what might be done to make these possible solutions a reality.

Please bring along your enthusiasm and your thinking caps, and a description of your large class.
