Kinesiology students Matt Vonk and Bronwen Valtchanov of Recreation and Leisure Studies were selected as this year's winners in the 2014 Applied Health Sciences (AHS) 3MT competition.

During the unique competition for research-based masters thesis and doctoral students, competitors have 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience.

Vonk, supervised by Laura Middleton, presented on “The effects of a single session of weight training on mental health.”

Valtchanov, supervised by Diana Parry, discussed the “Critical intersections of gender, race and ethnicity: Leisure constraints, negotiations and resistances of immigrant adolescent girls.”

Vonk and Valtchanov will represent AHS at the University-wide 3MT finals on March 27, 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Hagey Hall.

Thanks are extended to the judges for overseeing the competition and to each participant for showcasing their outstanding research and its anticipated impact for future generations.
