Partners Transforming Curling: Resources

Our house is your house: Strategies for inclusive curling spaces

Imagine the curling club is your house. How should you treat your guests?

Hospitality first:
Notice, invite, include. That’s how belonging grows.

Open the door:
Everybody belongs. Accessibility is welcome.

Show, don’t assume:
Nobody is born knowing about curling — it has its own language. Take time to explain and demystify the sport.

Make space:
Different cultures, experiences, and stories all belong here.

Beyond one visit:
Help participants understand how and when they can return, and where to find information about future events.

Tips for an effective open house

Emphasize the social

You might be inviting people in to try curling, but remember that one of the best aspects of the game is fun afterwards! Be sure to introduce the social elements too: have a coffee, a cookie…a conversation!

Explain the house rules

Leave your shoes and boots at the door? or step on that big sticky matt? Where do coats and bags go? Where is the lounge? The bathrooms? The change rooms?Make sure guests feel welcome in the entire space, not just on the ice!

Space it out

If you are running multiple Try Curling sessions on the same day, be sure to space it out. Give participants in one group time to ask questions and leave before the next group arrives. This will avoid the feeling of being rushed out, or chaos when entering!

Communication is key

When people come in to try curling, be sure to collect their email addresses, so that you can follow up. (It’s easy to obtain on a waiver.) Remember for those new to the game, they don’t know the season, when to register or what equipment they need, so after your event, reach out and tell them the basics and how to get involved.
