Arts is honoured to welcome Dr. Talia Bettcher as the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair in Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Trans Community Resilience. Joining the School of Social, Political and Historical Research, she is internationally recognized as a ground-breaking philosopher and scholar in the interdisciplinary field of transgender studies

Twenty research projects led by Faculty of Arts researchers have received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada to develop solutions for a more resilient and equitable future. “The diversity of Arts' scholarship highlights the strength of Waterloo’s research ecosystem and its capacity to produce innovative, impactful work with local, national, and global significance,” said Ana Ferrer, Associate Dean, Research.

The annual Psychology Discovery Conference continues to grow with the 2026 edition featuring more than 80 research presentations by undergraduate and graduate students — highlighting the breadth of psychological science at Waterloo while creating space for students to present, connect, and learn across disciplines.

Congratulations to Jacob Legault-Leclair, a PhD candidate in Sociology and Legal Studies, and Emily Mashaal, a Master’s candidate in cognitive neuroscience in the Department of Psychology, on earning second place in their respective categories.

Madeleine Kenyon, a PhD candidate in Applied Philosophy, earned third place at the University of Waterloo’s 2026 GRADflix showcase for her one-minute video explaining her research. She was one of five Faculty of Arts graduate students selected as finalists in the university-wide competition.

Today Dr. Geoffrey Fong, founder of the ITC Project at Waterloo, receives the Doll-Wynder Award, the highest honour for groundbreaking advances in public health, public policy or epidemiological research presented by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco.

Dr. Alexie Tcheuyap, Dean of Arts, has been elected as Secretary of the Royal Society of Canada’s (RSC) Academy of Arts and Humanities. Serving for a three-year term, Tcheuyap will also become a member of the RSC Council, the organization’s principal governing body.
