New Benefit Rates Effective May 1, 2023
What is happening?
On May 1st, of each year, the University’s extended health, dental, life insurance (Life) and long-term disability (LTD) benefits are typically subject to a contract renewal. Where applicable, new rates are applied, and employee deductions processed.
Participation in the University’s benefits program is mandatory for all eligible employees. Please refer to the employee Benefits section of the Human Resources website for more information.
Vacation Carry Forward process for 2023
- Please review your vacation allotment and consider taking vacation time before July 1, 2023
- Employees can automatically carry forward up to 10 unused days of vacation
- Only employees in exceptional circumstances will be approved to carry forward more than 10 unused days of vacation

New Green Shield Canada cards to be issued and suggest actions to support this change
As we approach the end of the year, the official change in our benefit plan provider from Canada Life to Green Shield Canada (GSC) on January 1, 2023 is fast approaching. As part of our communication and change management plan to support our employees with this transition, welcome kits from GSC have been mailed to your home address on file with the University.
Updating your address in Workday
- Employees participating in benefits should ensure their address on Workday is current
- Your new Green Shield Canada membership kits and ID cards will be mailed based on the address on file
- Please update your address in Workday before November 21
On January 1, 2023, the University’s provider for extended health and dental benefits is changing from Canada Life to Green Shield Canada. Welcome kits with new benefit ID cards will be delivered to home addresses of plan members (eligible employees and retirees) by Green Shield Canada in early December 2022.
Updated Performance Appraisal process for 2022
- Staff continue to have two choices for performance documentation
- We have updated the performance summary form for 2022
- Supporting resources are available on the HR website to assist you
- Workshop sessions to support supervisors and employees are available
The annual performance appraisal season for 2022 for University of Waterloo staff employees has begun.
Green Shield Canada benefits information sessions being offered next month
On January 1, 2023, the University’s benefit provider for extended health and dental benefits is changing from Canada Life to Green Shield Canada.
Minimum Wage Changes October 1, 2022
The minimum wage rates in Ontario are increasing on October 1, 2022 as summarized in the following table:
