For many students at Waterloo, the co-op program is more than just a way to gain work experience, it’s a transformative journey that shapes their career after graduation. This is especially true for computer science alumni Henry Shi (BCS' 14). With a passion for tech and business, he honed his skills through co-op terms at Scotia Capital and Bloomberg Sports, eventually venturing into Silicon Valley.

Generation Linkers, a Technovation Girls Waterloo team, has been named a North American Regional Honoree in the Technovation Global semi-finals.

The winning team, consisting of Sophie Rus, Le Anne Du, and Olivia Guo, won for their app LinkAge, which connects young adults aged 16–25 to lonely senior citizens with similar interests.

Professors Chengnian Sun and Hongyang Zhang have each been awarded $60,000 USD through the 2025 Google Research Scholar Program.

Professor Sun’s project will focus on enhancing compiler optimizations, while Professor Zhang’s project aims to improve the speed and efficiency of reasoning in large language models.

PhD graduate Aseem Baranwal has received the 2025 Cheriton Distinguished Dissertation Award. Established in 2019, the annual award recognizes outstanding doctoral research at the Cheriton School of Computer Science and includes a $1,000 prize.

PhD candidate Matthew Regehr has received a Graduate Excellence Scholarship from Waterloo’s Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute. Sponsored generously by BTQ, Matthew will receive $10,000.

Seven faculty members at the Cheriton School of Computer Science have received a 2024 Outstanding Performance Award. Established in 2005, this prestigious recognition honours Waterloo faculty members who demonstrate exceptional teaching and scholarship.

Professor Xiao Hu and her collaborators Binyang Dai and Ke Yi from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have received a 2025 SIGMOD Research Highlight Award for their paper, Reservoir Sampling over Joins.

Professor Sepehr Assadi has won the 2025 Presburger Award, a prestigious honour recognizing his exceptional contributions to theoretical computer science. The honour specifically acknowledges his pioneering work on establishing lower bounds for multi-pass streaming algorithms, a long-standing and challenging problem in the field.

Professor Craig S. Kaplan has been named a 2025 Fellow of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, an honour that recognizes his exceptional contributions to mathematics.

Liam Hebert, a PhD candidate in computer science, has been awarded the 2025 IEEE Canadian Foundation Nick Cercone Graduate Scholarship in Computer Science. The award recognizes a doctoral student at a Canadian university who demonstrates exceptional research promise with practical impact beyond the field of computer science, along with a strong commitment to helping others.
