Information for

Advanced Placement (AP) transfer credit

Effective for students starting at Waterloo in September 2019

The University of Waterloo recognizes AP (Advanced Placement) examination results and will consider awarding transfer credits for AP courses in which normally a minimum final grade of 4 is attained.

Official final AP results must be sent from the College Board directly to the Admissions Office at Waterloo before  transfer credit can be considered. Your final AP results must be received by August 3rd.

You have the option to decline your transfer credits. Further details will be emailed to you in August, once your transfer credits have been assessed.

Maximum number of transfer credits and additional notes

Faculty of Applied Health Sciences

  • The Recreation and Leisure Studies program will consider up to a maximum of 4.0 units.
  • The Health Studies, Kinesiology, and Public Health programs will consider up to a maximum of 3.0 units.

Faculty of Arts

  • Transfer credits will be considered up to a maximum of 2.0 units.
  • Accounting and Financial Management does not award transfer credit for AP Microeconomics or AP Macroeconomics.

Faculty of Engineering, Software Engineering, and Architecture

  • We consider these courses to be a good challenge and good preparation for our programs. You may find that you have covered some of the material in our first term courses but, in most cases, not enough for you to be exempted from the entire course without potentially running into academic difficulties later.
  • The depth and level of problem-solving is very different in our Engineering programs than in the courses in the systems listed above.
  • As a result, Engineering programs do not grant first-year course exemptions for AP courses.
  • If you're admitted to the School of Architecture, you'll be considered for credit up to a maximum of 0.5 units (the equivalent of a one-term course) which can be used as an elective course.

Faculty of Environment

  • Transfer credits will be considered up to a maximum of 2.0 units, except for Honours Planning, for which transfer credits will be considered up to a maximum of 1.0 units.

Faculty of Mathematics, including Computing and Financial Management

  • Up to 1.5 units of transfer credit (the equivalent of 3 term courses at Waterloo) will be allowed for AP courses.
  • If you have completed AP Calculus (BC) with a grade of 5, you may
    • accept the transfer credit for AP Calculus and begin your calculus sequence with MATH 138; or
    • decline the transfer credit for AP Calculus and begin your calculus sequence with MATH 137; or
    • decline the transfer credit for AP Calculus and begin your calculus sequence with Advanced Calculus, MATH 147.The option to take MATH 147 is available only if your Euclid Mathematics Contest score is 80 or higher or if you obtain permission from the instructor of the MATH 147 course once you arrive on campus in September.
  • The Advanced Placement (AP) Transfer Credit Chart for Business Administration and Computer Science Double Degree and Business Administration and Mathematics Double Degree lists the specific Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University transfer credit equivalents for these programs.
  • Mathematics/Chartered Professional Accountancy does not award transfer credit for AP Microeconomics or AP Macroeconomics.
  • Faculty of Mathematics does not award transfer credit for AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science, or AP Statistics.

Faculty of Science

  • Transfer credits will be considered up a maximum of 3.0 units.
  • Transfer credit of 0.5 units for MATH 127 will be allowed for AP Calculus (AB or BC) with a grade of 5, excluding the Mathematical Physics program which does not award transfer credit for AP Calculus AB.
  • Transfer credit of 0.5 units for STAT 202 will be allowed for AP Statistics with a grade of 4 or 5.
  • The Biotechnology/Chartered Professional Accountancy program does not award transfer credit for AP Microeconomics or AP Macroeconomics.
