FYI: How to select a valuable learning opportunity

One of the most important steps to gaining skills on the job is to seek out opportunities for growth and development.  When doing so, look for areas of personal interest or that may guide your career path. Explore areas of growth or improvement with your manager or that have been identified as part of your annual performance review.

In addition to Human Resources' Organizational and Human Development (OHD) team of learning and development specialists, there are several other departments and offices that offer learning and professional development workshops, programs, learning events for employees.

Campus Wellness

Campus Wellness offers a broad range of mental health training programs. Their goals are to raise campus mental health awareness, reduce mental health stigma, and support early intervention for those in need within our Waterloo campus community.

Centre for Career Development

The Centre for Career Development (CCD) supports all students, alumni and employees. The Centre runs the Employee Career Advising Program where Waterloo employees can meet with an Employee Career Advisor to receive help with career planning, career management strategies, work search methods and setting meaningful career goals.

Centre for Extended Learning

The Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) supports the design, development and delivery of online credit and non-credit courses for the University of Waterloo and advocates for adult, part-time and online learners.

Did you know? University of Waterloo employees have a minimum 5 days/35 hours of training and development under Policy 18, section Three. Employees are highly recommended to explore this policy. 

Information Systems and Technology

Information Systems and Technology offers courses in the IT Professional Development (ITPD) program to teach recommended technical computing skills to University employees. Training is delivered through instructor-led workshops, many of the courses are hands-on and some are delivered through LEARN.

Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Anti-racism (EDI-R)

One of the EDI-R Office’s key functions on campus is to build knowledge, skills and awareness related to equity by offering relevant educational opportunities, including training and learning resources. Explore workshops and events to assist in your development.

Office of Indigenous Relations

The Office of Indigenous Relations works collaboratively on and off-campus to advance the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, creating a long-term vision for the University, grounded in decolonization. Safety Office

Depending on your role at the University of Waterloo, there is specific mandatory training you need to complete as part of Waterloo's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Program. The Safety Office serves as the primary resource for health and safety training for staff, faculty, and students in a variety of areas.

Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office

The Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) supports all members of the Waterloo campus community who have experienced, or been impacted, by sexual violence. The office hosts many learning workshops and events as part of its public education and outreach.

WatSpeed

The WatSpeed department provides professional education designed to enable industry professionals to keep pace with emerging technologies and understand their impact on businesses, economies, the environment, and societies.

Self-Guided Learning

Open Waterloo

This site showcases a collection of open online resources for learning and knowledge creation/dissemination at the University of Waterloo. Open resources are freely available to users online, accessible by anyone from anywhere without discrimination and can be found in many formats from text and data, to audio, video, and multimedia.

LinkedIn Learning

University of Waterloo faculty, staff, and students can access web-based training from LinkedIn Learning using your WatIam username and password. LinkedIn Learning is an online learning platform with over 13000 courses taught by real-world experts and a library that is constantly up-to-date. Explore this valuable on demand training of a variety of topics, from leadership to technology, communication to team building.
