Two students from Waterloo Engineering are among six finalists for a $10,000 award for excellence in undergraduate research in the biomedical field.

Nidhi Juthani and Wesley Walker are scheduled to outline their research projects to a panel of judges and answer questions Jan. 6 at the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI) in Toronto.

Open to third- and fourth-year students at Canadian universities, the Sunnybrook Research Prize recognizes undergraduate research and aims to promote careers in biomedical research. The six-year-old competition is funded by royalties from technology developed by SRI scientists.

Juthani, a fourth-year chemical engineering student, made the finals for a project called “Silicone Oil Infused Polydimenthysiloxane for cell sheet engineering.”

A third-year nanotechnology engineering student, Walker was nominated for “Contrast enhanced US imaging with acoustically vaporized sub-micron droplets: The role of pulse parameters at clinical frequencies.”

The other four finalists are from Queen’s University, the University of Calgary, the University of Toronto and York University.
