The Suncor Emerging Leaders Award program provides threescholarships that are valued at up to $10,000 each (payable over four academic years) and awarded annually to outstanding students entering first-year Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering programs at the University of Waterloo. These scholarships are funded by a generous donation from Suncor in recognition of the outstanding programs at the University of Waterloo, and to meet the needs of the Canadian oil and gas industry through trained human resources capable of playing leadership roles in the sector
Suncor Awards are only available at Waterloo and four other educational institutions in Canada (Alberta, NAIT, Calgary, and McGill), and they are among Waterloo Engineering’s most prestigious awards.
Suncor offers additional support and the opportunity to develop ongoing relationships, which could involve presentations to students, mentorship, co-op work opportunities, and other initiatives developed by Suncor in conjunction with Waterloo Engineering and the award recipients. Participation in these initiatives is not a requirement of the award, but it is a unique opportunity to develop your leadership and career prospects.
To be eligible for this award, applicants must complete an online interview. We are excited to get to meet you virtually, through the medium of video interviewing. You’ll see that we’ve recorded the questions ourselves and you’ll be able to get a sense of our culture and values, as well as what we're looking for in our candidates.
The value we get with this, in addition to your traditional application, is to virtually meet you, get a sense of your personality and potential, and how you think on your feet. This has proven to be a helpful strategy for us and our applicants, as it is both time-efficient and meaningful.
The process is simple - you will be asked a question, given prep time, and a set amount of time to respond. It should only take 15 to 20 minutes to complete and can be done on your own time.
You will require an internet connected computer with a functioning webcam and microphone. The system allows for unlimited practice sessions but once you start the formal interview questions you only get one chance - this allows us to see your candid responses.
