A new Engineering Ambassador Team has been introduced to help future students find what undergraduate program is the best fit for their interests and skills. Recently launched, the team is comprised of current undergraduate students representing all 13 Waterloo Engineering undergraduate programs. Their goal is to share their unique experiences in the Faculty and at the University of Waterloo. Ambassadors will also be the hosts for the Grade 11 and 12 shadow program. A new website has been designed as a starting point for our future students.

On Tuesday, April 3, the University of Waterloo's Baja SAE design team unveiled their 2012 all-terrain vehicle in Engineering's Student Design Centre. Designed over the Spring and Fall 2011 school terms and constructed between January and March, the car will take part in a competition in Portland, Oregon, from May 2-5, 2012.

Waterloo Engineering students competed against each other this past weekend to choose the remainder of the teams for the 2012 Ontario Engineering Competition. The first-place winners of the junior design team include: Rahul Patel, Tarjote Chaggar, Matthew Vandenberg and William Cullen, all of mechatronics engineering. The top winners of the senior design team are: Nevin McCallum of electrical engineering, and Cody Prodaniuk, Jeff McClure and Maple Leung, all of mechanical engineering.

Waterloo management engineering students came second and third in the IIE Ryerson-Siemens Competition hosted by the Ryerson University student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers on September 30. The competition, in which over 100 engineering students representing Waterloo, Ryerson and the University of Toronto took part, was sponsored by Siemens and Canadian Tire.

Tech-savvy students will put their coding skills to the test during the Great Canadian Appathon taking place September 30 to October 2 at the Conrad Business and Entrepreneurship and Technology Centre and other university and college ‘hubs’ across the country. Student teams will have 48 hours to create a mobile game they think could become the next top selling smartphone app. CBET already has over 30 teams registered, more than three times the number that particpated last year.

Working for Kraft cookie manufacturer Peek Freans sounds like a pretty sweet gig. For Kartik Vaideswaran, a 2B chemical engineering student, it was. That is in large part because of the extra effort he put into his job as an Engineering Assistant at the company’s East York bakery. His contributions helped to have a production line certified above three sigma, a first for a Kraft facility in Canada. As a result, Kartik has been hired back for his next co-op term.
