Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, read the following statement to a news conference earlier today:

"It is with deep regret that we have confirmed the death of a member of our campus community and student body, who was struck by lightning this morning during an unexpected storm, and died of her injuries."

"The family of the deceased student have requested privacy, and have asked that we not release the student’s name."

Electrical and computer faculty members and students were the recipients of paper awards at two conferences held in July.
Professors Vijay Ganesh and Sebastian Fishmeister and ECE master's candidate Zach Newsham received the best student paper award at the 17th International Conference on Theory and Applications of Satisfiability Testing (SAT 2014) conference held in Vienna July 14-17.

Four Engineering teams with great business plans and strong pitches swept the July Velocity Fund Finals. 

ExVivo Labs, Grobo, MAJiK Systems and Ubiq were awarded $25,000 each, and Ubiq received an additional $10,000 for best hardware startup. These teams move into the new Velocity Foundry incubation space at 25 Water Street South in Kitchener to further develop their products.
