Dean Wells remembers Andrew Levitt

Tuesday, November 16, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

It is with the greatest sadness that I share the news of the passing of our colleague Andrew Levitt on Sunday, November 7th after a recent illness. Andrew was a recently retired lecturer in the School of Architecture where he had made a profound impact on students, colleagues and beyond.

A man of unique talent and insight, Andrew completed his undergraduate studies in architecture at the Architectural Association in London following up with a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

After working as both an architect and Jungian-orientated psychotherapist, Andrew joined the University of Waterloo School of Architecture where for

more than a decade he taught both the graduate and undergraduate design studios. His most recent book, Listening to Design, published in 2018, is a journey into the way compassion empowers creativity and expands our capacity to solve problems.

Andrew Levitt

Andrew was a caring, thoughtful, and dedicated person, traits that brought out the best in people. He was also a person of unwavering integrity with deep empathy who believed the built world and the inner world are linked and have the potential to touch us through the act of design.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Andrew’s wife Wendy and his family and friends. Details on how we will honour Andrew’s life and contributions will be shared as they are made available.

I know this is difficult news to hear and I want to remind everyone of our employee family assistance program with Homewood Health that you can access for counselling/bereavement services.

Although these past 18 months have been challenging for all of us, please know that we are all in this together – and remain so as a community. In difficult moments, it’s helpful to reach out and express to those close to you how much they matter. Connect with your friends, peers, and colleagues. Let people know you care and continue to support each other as we process the difficult loss of Andrew Levitt and all of those who are no longer with us.

Mary
