MBET alumnus wins a ward seat on Kitchener council

A recent Waterloo Engineering graduate is now a local politician after winning a council seat for the City of Kitchener.

Ayo Owodunni, who graduated from the Master of Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology program in 2021, topped a field of five candidates Monday to become the councillor for ward five - and the first Black member ever - on the 11-member council.

Ayo Owodunni, a graduate of the MBET program at Waterloo Engineering, is a new member of Kitchener council after winning a ward seat.

A senior manager at Black Professionals in Tech, Owodunni has been involved with numerous community organizations since coming to Canada from Nigeria six years ago.

His wife, Folake Owodunni, the CEO and co-founder of startup company Emergency Response Africa, which is working to improve healthcare access in Africa, is also an alumnus of the MBET program at Waterloo.
