Waterloo Engineering took several of the top honours at this year's Ontario Engineering Competition held February 6-8 at Ryerson University.
Two teams comprised of nanotechnology engineering students placed first
Capturing first place was the Suncayr team comprised of Derek Jouppi, Andrew Martinko, Rachel Paulter, Hayden Soboleski and Chad Sweeting. A cool solution to a burning problem, Suncayr is an easy-to-use marker that indicates when sunscreen needs to be reapplied. The fourth-year students' innovation has won many honours, including the first James Dyson Award ever to be awarded to a Canadian team.
Second spot in the innovation design category was awarded to nanotechnology engineering students Kristopher Bicanic, Richard Garner, Matthew Mulvale, Adam Svatos for the project entitled microfabricating an electrospray Ion Thruster for use on microsatellites.
Waterloo engineers placed second and third in the debate category, third in the senior design division and third in the communications competition.
Waterloo's two innovation design category winning teams and the second place debating team will compete in the Canadian Engineering Competition taking place at Memorial University March 5-8.
