Waterloo Engineering moved into the top 50 worldwide - and took the number one spot in Canada - in rankings that were recently released for 2022 by digital media company U.S. News and World Report.

In an evaluation of more than 2,000 universities based on research performance and reputation, Waterloo was rated the 49th best engineering school in the world, up eight spots from last year, and first overall in the country.

Waterloo also ranked two individual engineering disciplines in the top 50 and two more in the top 100, with electrical engineering at 23rd, mechanical engineering at 45th, civil engineering at 78th and chemical engineering at 93rd.

Other engineering disciplines at Waterloo weren’t directly ranked, but the University of Waterloo had three more top-100 showings in subject areas that heavily involve engineering.

It ranked 37th in energy and fuels, 89th in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and 90th in materials science.

The annual Best Global Universities ranked schools in more than 90 countries in 43 subjects based on 13 measures of academic research, and global and regional reputation.
