Yesterday we heard the extremely sad news that Jason Arbour, a second-year Computer Engineering student, had died. There are no words to express the deep sadness I felt when I heard this news. I spoke to Jason’s family this morning and heard from his father Kerry about what a thoughtful, adventuresome and kind person Jason was. In Kerry’s words, although Jason was only 20 years old he had lived a very full life.

Jason’s parents, Kerry and Anne, asked me to share the following message with our community:

Waterloo Engineering is the top engineering school in Canada for 2021 according to an influential annual ranking program.

In results released today, Maclean’s magazine placed Waterloo in a first-place tie with engineering at the University of Toronto based on program and research reputation.

That moves Waterloo up two spots from the Maclean’s rankings for the previous two years. Those ratings also included bibliometric data on research publications.

Today we acknowledge the passing of 2nd year Nanotechnology Engineering student Jaya Gupta and offer our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and peers.

Jaya was such an inspiration as she faced her very personal battle with cancer with both strength and courage. She shared with many that being a Waterloo engineering student was the absolute proudest accomplishment of her life and being a graduate of the program was a key achievement for her.

Digital X-ray technology developed by a Waterloo Engineering spinoff company has won approval from Health Canada.

A medical device licence issued for Reveal 35C, a dual-energy X-ray detector created by KA Imaging, follows clearance from the Food and Drug Administration in the United States earlier this month.
