A message of condolence from Dean Mary Wells

Friday, October 2, 2020

Today we acknowledge the passing of 2nd year Nanotechnology Engineering student Jaya Gupta and offer our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and peers.

Jaya was such an inspiration as she faced her very personal battle with cancer with both strength and courage. She shared with many that being a Waterloo engineering student was the absolute proudest accomplishment of her life and being a graduate of the program was a key achievement for her.

With the wonderful support of her family and her health care providers we were very fortunate to grant Jaya an honorary degree on Wednesday, September 16th with both myself and President Feridun Hamdullahpur attending a virtual convocation ceremony. Jaya was so happy to receive her Bachelor of Applied Science degree, with Honours in the Nanotechnology Engineering, cooperative program. Jaya also received her Iron Ring before her passing and that meant a great deal to her.

A family memorial service will take place in London, Ontario from 10 am to 11 am, October 3rd, 2020. You may attend via livestream from Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Please use the following link: https://distantlink.com/dlm14.html. The password for the livestream is Arbor2020.

The University will lower its flags tomorrow as we honour the short life of Jaya Gupta.
