Three new Waterloo Engineering undergraduates are starting their studies with financial backing from a local scholarship program for Black students.
Tahjeira Cameron, Carlton Darby and Dagmawit Worku are among 10 recipients of awards of $1,000 to $1,500 from the Waterloo Region chapter of the Congress of Black Women and the Caribbean Canadian Association of Waterloo Region.
Cameron is studying computer engineering and plans to get involved with groups including Women in Engineering and Engineers Without Borders.
Darby, who hopes to learn about food production during his co-op work terms, is in the chemical engineering program.
Worku, the valedictorian at her Kitchener high school, is studying architectural engineering with a view to helping marginalized people.
