Meet Olamide Olatunbosun!

My name is Olamide Olatunbosun, but most people call me Mide (me-day). I’m in Chem 2023 (Stream 4) and will be starting 3A in Spring 2021. My hobbies include basketball (playing, watching, writing), making music, and TikTok (follow me @midster007).

What is EngSoc? What was your role in EngSoc?

The Waterloo Engineering Society (or EngSoc for short) is a student organization that represents all engineering students and works to support them in all facets of their undergraduate career. Be it with running events such as the Waterloo Engineering Competition and Semi-Formal, services like Résumé Critiques and Technical Workshops, or advocacy to the faculty and external groups, EngSoc is by students, for students. From Fall 2019 to Fall 2020, I was the Vice President Student Life where I was responsible for creating the termly calendar and managing & overseeing the many events our amazing commissioners and directors ran each term.

What is student life like at Waterloo? How has it changed online?

As I mentioned before, the EngSoc hosts dozens of events each term, providing you a chance to have fun and meet new people. There are also a plethora student design teams and clubs for you to get involved with. Intramurals are a great way to stay active, have a good time, and maybe try something new; I play volleyball with some classmates and I absolutely love it. Things have obviously changed with the move to online learning; we can no longer have mass study sessions or just sit in POETS and relax. However, EngSoc and many other groups have made the most of the transition online, doing their best to host events and services on Discord, Zoom, etc…, while keeping the in-person spirit.

If you could ask a question to your future self in ten years, what would you ask?

If I could ask my future self 10 years down the line a question, I’d ask if renewable energy/technology has taken a significant jump in the past decade. The demand for energy and power generation will only increase as time goes on, but we need to find ways to do so without harming the planet; my hope is to be part of that solution. Or I’d ask myself if LeBron has overtaken Jordan
