As part of our FYDP/Capstone 2023 spotlights, we’re excited to introduce “Rubber Duckies Ltd.” from the Civil Engineering team: Emeline Wang, Madeleine MacIsaac-Sun, Tiana Anandappa and Dominique Morrison!
Explain your project in one sentence
We are designing a small-scale hydroelectric system to increase the share of renewable energy used by remote and Indigenous communities.
What has been the best part of your project so far?
The best part has been the opportunity to work together with the group members and growing closer over the span of the project.
What are the biggest challenges you've faced during the project?
This project is very specific and something that none of the group members have had direct experience in through coursework or co-ops. Navigating through the design process was therefore a challenge that took significant research before we were able to build the knowledge and confidence to perform design work. Our technical advisor, James Craig, was key in guiding us through this.
How does your project improve human lives and/ or our planet's health?
The remote communities of British Columbia are often not connected to the provincial power grid and must rely on the expensive process of transporting diesel fuel for energy. Burning of these fuels releases harmful exhausts and greenhouse gases into the environment. Our project provides a renewable, cost-effective, and reliable source of power to the residents in Indigenous and remote communities.
What's next for your team members (ie: working full-time, looking for a job, starting a business, etc).
All members will be working full-time in engineering!
