We would like to introduce one of our amazing Waterloo Engineering Student Design Teams, The UW Formula Motorsports (UWFM) team.
UWFM is a student design team that designs, builds, tests, and competes with an open-wheel formula-style racecar in the Formula SAE competition series. The team has 6 systems: aerodynamics, chassis, electronics, powertrain, suspension, and business, which are comprised of students across all faculties and programs.
Visit the UWFM website to learn more.
What project(s) is the design team currently working on?
We design a vehicle each year iterating off of the previous one and build it from scratch. Each season begins after the competition in May, and we spend Spring/Fall Term designing the car and Fall/Winter Term building the car. We attend competition and repeat!
What competition(s) has/have the Team been a part of recently or in the past?
The main competition we attend is FSAE Michigan. In the past we have also attended Formula North, which is now discontinued. Throughout the year we also attend locally hosted mini-competitions such as UofT Shootout and Pittsburgh Shootout.
What are the benefits of being part of a Student Design Team?
It's
a
lot
of
fun
and
you'll
make
a
lot
of
long-lasting
friendships!
Not
only
that,
but
designing
and
building
a
vehicle
that
runs
on
its
own
power
is
an
incredibly
rewarding
and
unique
experience.
Additionally,
the
technical
experience
that
you'll
get
on
the
team
is
extremely
valuable
and
will
land
you
great
co-op
positions.
You'll
be
working
through
a
rigorous
engineering
design
cycle,
learning
about
manufacturing
first-hand,
and
performing
validation
on
your
designs.
If
you're
on
the
business
team,
you'll
be
gaining
experience
with
finances,
marketing,
sponsor
outreach/management,
and
case
presentations
in
a
practical
real-world
setting.
How can interested students join this team?
Simply show up and do the work! We have no formal recruitment process (i.e. interviews, applications). Our General Meetings are every Monday at 7PM in E5-2004. Come out, meet the team, learn about what we're doing, and get involved!
