As part of our FYDP/Capstone 2022 spotlights, we’re excited to introduce team 2 from our interdisciplinary teams: Waleed Ahmed, Martin Ethier, Zain Denno, and Connor Barker and their project “Vizia”!
Can you explain your project in one sentence?
Our project aims to make wearable glasses that can extract, decode, and communicate information from an image to a visually impaired user through audio transcription.
What has been the best part of your project so far?
Experimenting and learning about accessible technologies! Learning how people with visual impairments interact with apps and websites has definitely changed the way we think about accessibility as engineers.
What is the biggest challenge you've faced during your project?
Working within the constraints of a global pandemic has been a challenge; supply chain issues lead to long lead times, decreased access to lab space, and decreased opportunity for in-person collaboration.
What's next for your team members once you're finished?
Two of our team members will be working as software engineers with robotics and big data, one of our team members will be working as a hardware engineer with semiconductors, and one of our team members will be pursuing a master’s degree with a focus on deep learning research.
