California is entering its sixth year of drought. It’s clear that the old ways of coping with drought — overdraft of groundwater, stream depletion, and greater imports — will no longer meet the needs of the 21st Century. The solution to our challenge of urban water security will likely consist of a combination of demand management and the development of a portfolio of new water supplies.

Using Open-Access GIS to Address Issues in Spatial Hydrological Modelling

Digital elevation models (DEMs) are a primary data input for many applications in spatial hydrology and geomorphology. DEMs are commonly used to delineate watersheds, to map landforms and soils, to analyze stream networks, and to model variable source areas, surface runoff and flooding, erosion, and contaminant migration. The past decades have been marked by significant improvements in the quality, spatial resolution, and availability of DEM data sources.

WE Go.DEsign

WE Go.DEsign is a two day Engineering Design and Research Competition for women currently enrolled in grades 10 and 11 presented by the Goethe-Institut. The Grand Prize will be a language, engineering and culture trip to Germany during Summer 2017! There are two elements to the competition, a Research Symposium and a Design Challenge. Each element will be judged by Goethe-Institut and University of Waterloo faculty and staff, with prizes awarded in each element.

Abstract:

The Cognitive Dynamic System (CDS) is a unique research tool inspired by certain aspects of the brain; one aspect is "predictive adaptation," known in cognitive neuroscience. From an engineering perspective, predictive adaptation plays a key role in the CDS, most importantly when the environment is disturbed by the presence of unexpected adverse events, commonly referred to as ‘risk.’
