Meet Chukwunonso Moneme!
My name is Chukwunonso Moneme. I’m in the chemical engineering class of 2022. Currently the 'B' Society Inclusivity Commissioner (and Head Lettuce) for the Engineering Society, VP for NSBE UW 'B', and Undergraduate Student-at-Large on the Committee on Student Mental Health. In my free time I like to play piano and bass clarinet, cook and bake, and read.
Why did you choose your program?
I came into chemical engineering because I was really passionate about math and science but wanted to do something that focused on applying those disciplines to the real world. I initially came into the program intending to focus in on food engineering, but I've recently found that I'm very interested in polymer engineering, particularly in relation to biocompatibility and sustainability. The great thing about chem eng is that it's a really broad field of study, so there's lots of room to explore and refine your studies to something that you're really passionate about.
What are you most excited for this year?
This year I'm really excited to see a lot of the changes that should be coming to the school community. Since we just got Dr. Wells as our new Dean last year, and we're also getting a new University President soon. I'm excited to see how the culture of Waterloo campus will be changing as well as seeing the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) grow into a bigger chapter! We've already seen a difference in the community that exists amongst Black students in eng and I'm excited to see how this newly revitalized chapter will help redefine the culture of Engineering at Waterloo.
What has been your favourite co-op placement?
I am presently the Operations and Procurement Coordinator for Medical Cannabis by Shoppers. I've been working with my team for over a year now and really enjoying it because they treat me like a valuable part of the team, but also respect that I have other things going on as a student. They are genuinely concerned about my development as a student and an engineer, and that means a lot to me. I've learnt so much that I'm going to be able to carry with me in my career and that to me is a quintessential co-op placement.
