Introduction

I am a fourth-year civil engineering student specializing in transportation engineering. I'm really interested in making cities more pedestrian friendly and walkable through the design of sustainable infrastructure. I love Formula 1, swimming, and spending time with friends!

What does it mean to you to be a black engineer?

To me, being a black engineering student means acknowledging the barriers those before me faced when entering this field, while recognizing my duty to continue their effort of making engineering a more inclusive industry for future black students. It also means creating equity-centered solutions to engineering problems and ensuring the analysis of human impacts is included in every design conversation.

What is your favourite UWaterloo Engineering memory?

My favourite UWaterloo Engineering memory would be finishing the first half of my capstone project with my team this past summer. We are focused on developing the Port Lands, an under-developed area in Toronto. Our goal is to make it a pedestrian friendly, sustainable, and accessible community, while reducing the need for auto-dependent transportation. Capstone has truly been a culmination of everything we've learned over the course of our degrees, and it has been amazing watching our design start to come together.

What changes would you like to see within engineering (either in school or professional spaces) in the next 5-10 years?

Many people believe that an engineer's only purpose is to serve their community in a technical capacity, but there is so much more to learn about the intersection between engineering work with environmental and social justice, so I hope this is explored more in the future.
