Waterloo Engineering students and alumni are invited to participate in an exclusive virtual Office Hour with Waterloo Engineering alumnus Mark Chien (BASc '01, Systems Design Engineering), Head of CRM Platform for Amazon Web Services. 

During this Office Hour, Mark Chien will talk about his career path from when he graduated from Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo to join Trilogy, an enterprise software startup based in Austin, TX and then join Amazon.com in Seattle, WA more than 15 years ago. Mark will share insights and learnings on what it's like to work at Amazon.com and experience the 135X growth in market capitalization from when he first joined Amazon ($13 billion) to now ($1.7 trillion). Join fellow alumni and students for this virtual Office Hour to gain access to Mark’s experience and a peak into the inner workings of Amazon. Mark Chien is an intrapreneurial Product and Engineering leader with over 20 years of experience in the tech industry ranging from enterprise software, ecommerce, consumer devices and web services. He graduated with Honours from the Systems Design Engineering program at the University of Waterloo and then joined Trilogy, an enterprise software startup based in Austin, TX where he spent the first 5 years of his career. Mark then joined Amazon.com in 2006 and relocated to Seattle, WA where he has been ever since.

Mark first started on Amazon Mechanical Turk, one of the first set of services launched in AWS. He then moved over to focus on the Amazon.com website where he spent many years helping customers shop on Amazon and was a critical technical leader in helping Amazon become one of the biggest retailers in Fashion. Mark then went back to AWS to rejoin Amazon Mechanical Turk and helped launch two new AWS services focused on generating ground truth data and incorporating human in the loop for AI/ML services. He then did a stint over in Alexa, where he ran a small innovation team focused on exploring gaming on Alexa. Mark then returned to AWS to be in his current role where he manages the CRM Platform for AWS which powers the Sales and Marketing growth engine of AWS.
