As engineers, our intuition often leads us to the notion that engineering work generally has a huge impact on society. However, when further contemplating this intuition it can be challenging to truly understand how seemingly small design decisions can end up causing huge waves. In conversation with a recent engineering alumnus, a PEng and JD, and legal professionals from the Law Commission of Ontario, we will discuss how design decisions made in information systems and artificial intelligence can create significant issues and challenges, and how we as a society are still figuring out how to address these from both a legal and an engineering perspective.
