Faculty service awards

The Faculty of Engineering has established annual awards to recognize outstanding contributions by an individual faculty member in service to their department/School, the Faculty and/or the University of Waterloo.

Two awards will be offered:

  1. “Unsung Hero Award” for those faculty members who have gone above typical service expectations without the expectation of recognition; and

  2. “Service Excellence Award” for those faculty members who have dedicated their service to advance the mission of our Faculty over several years.

      1. Eligibility

      2. Prize Amount

      3. Criteria

Eligibility

Candidates must be a full-time tenured or continuing lecturer faculty member in the Faculty of Engineering. Previous winners are not eligible for nomination for 5 years after receiving the award.

Prize amount

Each award consists of a monetary award of $2,500, which may be paid to the recipient as taxable income or to support his/her research, teaching, and professional activities via an internal grant.

Criteria

Candidates are evaluated in terms of (i) the leadership and commitment to their service duties; (ii) the level and impact of their contributions to service; and (iii) the diversity of their service engagement. The award can be given in recognition of an extraordinary example of service within a limited time frame or a sustained pattern of exceptional service over a longer time frame. Please note that the award focuses on service to the Faculty and University, as opposed to service to the community at large.

The “Unsung Hero Award will recognize faculty members who repeatedly go beyond typical service expectations. They are people who continually demonstrate a willingness to volunteer their time and energy to their department/school and Faculty and are outstanding in the execution of their duties without the expectation of recognition.

The “Service Excellence Award” recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the Faculty of Engineering that is above and beyond what is expected of their position. Recipients of this award have made a positive impact on the broader community and furthered Waterloo Engineering’s mission with a significant and sustained contribution of their work. These people help to advance the primacy of our academic mission in preserving and supporting faculty and all the people and resources that help ensure the success of our students and of our research programs.

The awards are open to all faculty members who have demonstrated a minimum commitment of 15 years of service to the University.

Nomination packages will be reviewed by a special award committee chaired by the dean and composed of representatives of associate deans, departmental chairs and School directors.

Upon review of nominations, the committee makes a recommendation to the dean for consideration.
