Alum steps into University leadership role

The University of Waterloo has appointed an alum from the Faculty of Engineering as interim vice-president, academic and provost effective July 1, 2025.

Dr. Thomas Duever earned his bachelor, masters and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Waterloo. After three years as a research engineer in the pulp and paper industry, he returned to the University as a faculty member for 24 years.

During his career at Waterloo, Duever held multiple leadership roles, including associate chair of graduate studies, associate chair of undergraduate studies and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering for nine years. His dedication to teaching and mentorship earned him a Faculty of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award.

For the past decade, Duever has served as dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University.

He will serve in his new leadership role at Waterloo until June 30, 2027.
