Alumni company designs robots for routine health-care tasks

Three graduates of Waterloo Engineering have teamed up to improve health care through the use of autonomous robots to perform routine, time-consuming functions.

Nima Zamani (BASc ’14, MASc ’18), Tim Lasswell (BASc ’14, MASc ’17) and John Van Leeuwen (BSc ’81) are co-founders of Cobionix, which makes a cobot – short for collaborative robot – designed for tele-assisted ultrasound procedures.

“Health care is inherently human-centred, and our focus is on supporting professionals by handling repetitive tasks, allowing them to spend more time on critical patient care,” said Zamani.

The company is conducting trial deployments of its flagship robot, Codi, under careful supervision at Saskatoon’s Virtual Health Hub, which helps adopt and deliver health-care services to remote communities.
