At least five Waterloo Engineering alumni have made the impressive Forbes 30 Under 30 lists for 2024.
Peter Gokhshteyn, Kevin Michael, Tom Storwick, Kelly Zheng and Chee Hau Teoh are among 600 young changemakers in North America who have been recognized for their standout entrepreneurial achievements in 20 categories.
Peter Gokhshteyn (BASc ‘18, systems design engineering) co-founded Toronto-based Tempo Labs with Kevin Michael (BASc ‘19, systems design engineering) in May 2023. The startup aims to make web app development faster and accessible to anyone with AI tools and has already raised over $1.2 million from Y Combinator and General Catalyst.
Tom Storwick (BASc ‘19, nanotechnology engineering) and Kelly Zhang (BASc ‘19, chemical engineering) co-founded Coastal Carbon which uses AI models to accurately quantify the amount of seaweed growing in certain regions based on satellite images. Seaweed farmers – the company’s customers – use these models to claim carbon credits.
Chee Hau Teoh (MASc ‘20) co-founded Nfinite Nanotech with Jhi Yong Loke (MASc ’21) during their graduate studies at Waterloo Engineering. The company aims to eliminate plastic waste by providing sustainable packaging solutions through smart nanocoatings. Customers include PepsiCo, Danone and Amcor.
