Devoted physics professor remembered by Dean Wells

Thursday, January 6, 2022

With the start of 2022 it is very sad to share the news of the passing of devoted physics professor Firas Kamal Mansour on Wednesday, December 29th.  A lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Professor Mansour taught many first-year engineering students and was a recipient of the Excellence in Science Teaching Award in 2012.

Over the years many students claimed that they would not have passed introductory physics without Firas’ fierce commitment to supporting his students. On receiving his Distinguished Teacher Award, many students commented about his memorable stories and demonstrations, his extra review sessions, and his great sense of humour. He was noted for having an approachable manner and unique teaching style that would hold his students' attention while also effectively building their confidence and problem-solving skills.

Firas joined the department of Physics & Astronomy in the Faculty of Science as a graduate student in 1995 and earned a departmental award as an outstanding teaching assistant. Firas was appointed to a Continuing Lectureship in 2007, where he remained in service until his passing.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Firas’ family, including his wife Melissa Finn and his three young sons. The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 6, 1:30 pm at Waterloo Masjid, 213 Erb St W, Waterloo.  Burial will follow at Parkview Cemetery, 335 University Ave, Waterloo.

A fund has been established to assist Melissa and the children in this most difficult moment. Donations can be made via Go Fund Me.

I know this is difficult news to hear and I want to remind everyone of our employee family assistance program with Homewood Health that you can access for counselling/bereavement services. Details can be found at: Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).pdf

As we continue to manage through this global pandemic, when we hear such sad news, I hope we can find comfort in knowing that we are all in this together – that we are part of a Waterloo community. In difficult moments, it’s helpful to reach out and express to those close to you how much they matter. Connect with your friends, peers, and colleagues. Let people know how much they mean to you and continue to support each other as we process the sad news of Firas’ passing, and all of those who are no longer with us.
