Newtonville, a tabletop eco-friendly city, along with its enthusiastic Engineering and Science Quest camper architects provided the backdrop for the federal government’s $1.25 million Actua funding announcement made August 17 in E5. Actua is a national science, engineering and technology youth outreach network of which Waterloo’s ESQ and nine other Ontario university organizations are members. Engineering dean Adel Sedra emceed the event at which Peter Braid, MP for Kitchener-Waterloo, made the announcement about the funding provided through FedDev Ontario‘s Youth Stem Initiative. The initiative is aimed at encouraging students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 to pursue an education or career in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Martin Scherer, manager of Waterloo’s Outreach program, said he plans to apply to Actua for a portion of the $1.25 million to strengthen existing ESQ programs and to help with satellite camps.
