Waterloo Engineering placed three subject areas in the top 20 and a total of six in the top 50 in world rankings released this week by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for 2022, telecommunications engineering (11th), environmental science and engineering (12th), electrical and electronic engineering (18th), transportation science and technology (28th), water resources (34th) and remote sensing (40th) at Waterloo all cracked the top 50.

Seven more in top 100
Also known as the Shanghai Rankings, the results placed seven more subject areas at Waterloo – computer science and engineering (51-75), energy science and engineering (51-75), materials science and engineering (51-75), automation and control (76-100), civil engineering (76-100), chemical engineering (76-100) and mechanical engineering (76-100) - in the top 100.
The rankings covered 54 subject areas in all, including 22 under the broad heading of engineering. Waterloo made the rankings in 18 of 22 engineering subject areas.
Measures of research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international research awards were used to determine the rankings.
