Two first-year Waterloo Engineering students are among six campus-wide winners of HeForShe IMPACT scholarships for exceptional young women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs.

The $12,000 scholarships are part of the University of Waterloo’s ongoing effort to achieve gender equality in academic programs long dominated by men.

The engineering winners are Heather Musson of software engineering and Christina Sullivan of mechatronics engineering.

Musson, a keen horseback rider, found a fit in engineering for her passions for math and science. She looks forward to working in a variety of different fields.

“Technology is everywhere,” she said. “Almost every company uses some type of technology in their workplace.”

Sullivan, who comes from a family of engineers, plays for the varsity field hockey team and is passionate about practical applications designed to help people.

“I decided to apply to the mechatronics engineering program because it integrates hardware with software,” she said. “While digital is important, humans still need to interact with the physical world.”

Waterloo is one of 10 universities around the world participating in a United Nations campaign called HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10, which seeks to remove social and cultural barriers preventing women from reaching their potential.
