Faster skate blades on the verge of taking off

Perseverance is paying off for a Waterloo Engineering alumnus with ambitions to make the game of hockey even faster than it already is.

Jeffrey Azzolin (BASc 2013, Mechanical) applied his education to develop a skate blade that speeds up players using a spring action to store and release energy as they stride.

His patented Bladetech Burner – which he compares to a diving board or a composite hockey stick - is now being worn by one National Hockey League player and 14 teams are testing it.

Azzolin’s startup company, Bladetech Hockey Inc. of Toronto, has products in 12 stores in Ontario and plans to expand into several other provinces, in addition to online sales.
